A facility that can convert industrial waste gas to sustainable biofuels will be opened in March in Shougang Group's compound in the Caofeidian city in northern China's Hebei province.
The equipment was installed by Shougang LanzaTech, a joint venture dedicated to new energy development under the Shougang Group, a leading Chinese iron and steel producer, in one of Shougang's factories.
It will convert the industrial waste gas discharged by the factory to liquid ethanol with a purity of 99.5 percent, animal feeds with high protein, and compressed natural gas.
The facility, which is the world's first commercial project of its kind, uses the technology developed by the U.S. biotech company LanzaTech.
By the end of the year, the facility is expected to produce 46,000 tons of ethanol fuel, 76.5 million tons of animal feed and 3.3 million cubic meters of compressed natural gas.
This will significantly reduce the factory's discharge of carbon dioxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide, thus helping curb pollution in the smog-prone region in northern China.
Conventionally, waste gas can only be used for heating or electricity generation with low efficiency.
The machines are currently undergoing the final testing procedures.
