Chinese Commerce Ministry said on Thursday that the U.S. approach to trade is typical of trade protectionism and Cold War era mentality.

Ministry spokesperson Gao Feng said during a regular briefing in Beijing that China has the confidence to deal with any protectionist behavior and hopes the U.S. could take steps to resolve differences through dialogue.

"We are aware of the discussions in the U.S.. China will not change its position. We hope the U.S. will follow the rules of the global economy and free trade," said Gao, making the statement when asked to comment on the U.S. trade chief Robert Lighthizer's recent announcement about giving China until June before tariffs on Chinese goods take effect.

"The door for dialogue remains open. But we must first abandon protectionist behaviors and discussions must be equal. China is against any forced dialogue proposed under pressure and force."

Gao added that the recent U.S. tax proposal sets a bad precedent on trade and such measures could hurt its consumers and will not be beneficial to either side.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive memorandum last week, which could impose tariffs on up to 60 billion U.S. dollars in Chinese imports.
