EU probe on Chinese EVs lacks sufficient evidence: ministry

China's Ministry of Commerce on Thursday reiterated its strong dissatisfaction over a decision by the European Commission to launch an anti-subsidy probe into Chinese electric passenger vehicles, which lacked sufficient evidence and is a typical trade protectionist act.

He Yadong, spokesman of the ministry, made the remarks in response to a recent report in which the German government voiced concerns toward the countervailing duty investigation.

Not only is China strongly opposed to this probe, but it has also been questioned by many member states in the European Union who believe that protectionist measures will only be counterproductive, He said.

This investigation doesn't serve the interests of either automobile industry on both sides, seriously disrupts the global automobile industrial and supply chain, dampening the global fight against climate change, and will have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations, He said.

He called the European Commission to abandon the practice of trade protectionism, deepen trade and investment cooperation between the automobile industries of China and Europe, to promote mutually beneficial and win-win development, and create a favorable environment for both sides to jointly respond to climate change and realize the green transformation, He added.
