Liaoning's Yingkou Port records a big jump in shore power usage

The container terminal subsidiary of Liaoning Port Holdings (Yingkou) Co Ltd has seen a remarkable surge in shore power usage. In the first five months of this year, the shore power consumption at the terminal in Yingkou, Liaoning province, reached 430,000 kWh, 20 times more than the level of 2023.

"It accounts for one-sixth of all berthing vessel operations," said Wang Fei, deputy general manager of the subsidiary. He expressed optimism about the company's commitment to green practices, stating that they anticipate the annual shore power consumption to reach one million kWh this year.

Shore power, utilized by vessels when docked, serves as a cleaner alternative to onboard generators, effectively addressing air pollution and noise issues associated with maritime operations. This shift underscores the subsidiary's pivotal role in driving forward the development of eco-friendly port facilities, said Wang.

Located in the central part of the Liaodong Peninsula, Yingkou Port, a subsidiary of Liaoning Port Group, serves as a vital gateway to the sea for the northeastern provinces and the eastern part of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

The port has maintained a dominant market share of around 70 percent in the domestic container trade sector for years in Northeast China.

Functioning as a key hub for domestic container shipping, Yingkou Port's inland container routes connect to 30 major ports along the country's coastline. The port operates over 300 monthly container services, with frequent schedules to major ports such as Shanghai and Guangzhou offering more than two sailings per day, and destinations such as Ningbo, Taicang, and Yantai providing at least one sailing per day.

Yingkou Port currently boasts 61 operational berths, including 56 berths capable of accommodating vessels over 10,000 tons.

The port's shipping services extend to over 140 ports in more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.

In the first five months of this year, Yingkou Port recorded a total cargo throughput of 89.55 million tons, reflecting a 2.4 percent increase, with container throughput reaching 2.31 million TEUs, marking a notable growth of 10.3 percent.
