Chinese e-commerce giant JD has accepted the mobile payment option from Alipay, which is operated by financial technology company Ant Group. This marks a significant step that experts say breaks down payment barriers between the two internet companies, and enhances interconnectivity of various online platforms.
Alipay said in a statement provided to China Daily that it will continue to expand openness, as well as exploring connectivity and deepen cooperation with different platforms, so as to create greater value for merchants and consumers.
Previously, consumers purchasing products on JD's online marketplace could only complete online payments through Tencent's WeChat Pay, JD Pay and UnionPay.
Earlier this month, JD Logistics, the logistics arm of JD, announced that sellers on Alibaba's online marketplaces Taobao and Tmall could choose JD Logistics as the delivery method. Moreover, consumers shopping on Taobao and Tmall platforms are now able to use Tencent's WeChat Pay for transactions.
