Rainstorms risks of geological disaster in E China

Beijing (CNS)--The Ministry of Land and Resources and the China Meteorological Administration predicated that the risk of more geological disasters in eastern China's Zhejiang Province is increasing.

More than 2,000 people were evacuated and over 290,000 suffered from the floods and geological disasters caused by days of downpours in Zhejiang, China News Service reported Wednesday in Hangzhou.

Torrential rain from Tuesday morning to Wednesday swept 21 counties and cities in the province, flooding roads and farmland. The rain toppled 79 houses and affected 6.15 hectares of cropland, the report said. One hundred and ninety-two businesses shut down and 18 roads were blocked in the disaster, inflicting a direct economic loss of about 187 million yuan.

Chen Chuan, head of the Department of Water Resources of Zhejiang Province, said the water level of seven big and 29 middle-sized reservoirs have reached their ceiling.
