Chongqing (CNS) -- Chongqing authorities have cracked 405 underworld rings and arrested 4,425 suspects in two years of anti-organized crime efforts, according to Liu Guanglei, secretary at the Chongqing Politics and Law Committee, August 9.
Since June 2009, Chongqing has expended a considerable amount of resources on anti-organized crime police activities. By June 2011, 3,415 suspects had been sent to trial and 186 underworld gangs were sentenced.
Throughout the entire police campaign, many gangs were destroyed and serious law-violating public officials were legally punished, such as Chen Mingliang, Yuecun, Chen Kunzhi, former Municipal Judicial Bureau Director Wenqiang, former Municipal Public Security Bureau (PSB) Deputy Director Peng Changjian, and former Municipal PSB Traffic Police Station Captain Chen Honggang.
In addition, Chongqing carried out a 100-day inspection and reform of the food and pharmaceutical industry. Called "anti-crime in the food industry" by the public, the campaign has detected 761 food and pharmaceutical security crimes, captured 763 suspects, and removed 40 gangs.
In constructing a new crime prevention and control system, the two functions of traffic police and security police were combined and digital detective projects were increased. Two hundred billion yuan (about $3.11billion) was invested in 500,000 new digital cameras by 2012.
Chongqing's achievement was labeled as a model for other provinces, according to a recent assessment by the Central Committee for Comprehensive Management of Public Security.
