Guangzhou (CNS) -- The first quintuplets in Guangzhou were born in the Provincial Maternal and Child Care Service Center around 9 am Thursday.

At the age of 24, the mother, Zheng Xiaoni, had a C-section performed. Both the mother and her three male and two female premature babies were safe.

Weighing 0.9 kg, 0.8 kg, 0.72 kg, 0.94 kg, and 0.85 kg, the five babies cried weakly at birth and were wrapped right away in a special protective layer for the purpose of heat preservation and infection prevention.

They were sent to the incubator for further observation. Only when their weights all reach 2.5 kg can they be brought home.

The doctor-in-charge, Niu Jianmin, told CNS that the operation went better than expected. The mother bled just as in normal single-baby cases.

The five infants have been kept in good conditions and have all grown to almost 1 kg, close to a 28-week single baby.
