Changsha (CNS) -- An agricultural vessel sunk in Nanxian, in the city of Yiyang, on the hinterland of Dongting Lake, Hunan Province on August 28. Rescue work has finished. Five people were lost their lives and two were injured.
The ship owner Tang Xinnian sailed from Ouchi River to Mahekou on the 28th. At around 4:10 p.m., the overloaded ship flipped over about 20 meters from the bank. All 14 people aboard were drowning when villagers on the ground swam to the ship and called for help right away.
Cao Jian, one of the witnesses, told CNS that the accident was too remote from the residential area. Despite more villagers rushing to the scene on motor bikes, it was already too late. Cao alone saved six, four of whom survived.
Among the 14 people on board, 13 were female. The eldest was 83 years old, and the youngest was one and a half. Seven of them are in good condition and two others are still in treatment.
The Nanxian government promptly organized the local public security, fire control, safety supervision, maritime affairs, communications, and public health offices to help the injured, investigate the cause, and deal with the aftermath.
