Lanzhou (CNS) – "Illness took away your body but you leave your soul with life...Youth gave you a dream and you leave pains with perseverance," goes the poem entitled "The Soul Walker."
The author is 17-year-old Liu Daming, who suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic bone disorder. Weighed 20 kilograms and 1.4 meters tall, he has had nine bone fractures and gone through more than 10 surgeries.
All these cannot stop him from his pursing his passion for writing.
"What I've suffered at the hospital is unimaginable for some people. I realized that there's nothing I can do to change it, so I've tried to accept it," said Liu.
He has shown his gift of writing since his childhood. His two pieces, entitled "We will Hold Hands" and "Waning Overnight" won the first prizes from the Cup of Chinese Newspaper and the Cup of Chinese Youth Writers respectively.
Encouraged by his teacher, Liu started writing poems from September, 2011. He spends his most spare time in reading and writing. He can write more than 5,000 words an hour nonstop, said Liu. He has written over 70,000 words of his autobiography.
We must thank sufferings because they make us stronger, said Liu, dubbed "China's Hawking" by his classmates, at a class meeting on November 7.
He is easy-going and has strong sense of excellence and self-respect, said Fu Yu, Liu's teacher. He has a unique way of thinking and wants to reach his goals by learning from life experience, added Fu.
"I have a simple dream that one day I will go to a university and write a good book, said Liu." I will try to help others, with my words or my story."
