Beijing (CNS) -- An album of eight paintings, depicting eight famous poems written by Mao Zedong, was sold for 230 million yuan (about 36.16 million USD) at the Hanhai Autumn Auction on the evening of November 17.
Created by Fu Baoshi in his artistic prime during 1964 and 1965, the work broke not only the record price paid for his most valuable piece, but for all art works traded on autumn auctions in China.
The album is deemed a perfect combination of realism and innovation in its spirit, and of creativity and variety in its composition, employing enchanting and soothing colors and a wealth of romantic connotations.
Other historic and representative paintings in Chinese contemporary art include Qi Baishi's widely-recognized landscape paintings and Wu Hufan's copy of "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" - the magnum opus and one of the few surviving works by Huang Gongwang (1269–1354) painted between 1348 and 1350, both of which also broke records in the Chinese auction industry.
