Hong Kong (CNS) -- Over 10,000 child abuse cases were reported in Taiwan this year, according to World Vision Taiwan (WVT) in a press release on November 19.
By October 31, the WVT management of the child protection line "113," had recorded 10,053 abuses on children and juveniles, reported Central News Agency. 2010 statistics show about 18,454 children under the age of 18 were recorded to be living with abuse, equal to one occurrence every 28 minutes.
Director Du Ming-han of the WVT blames the increasing unemployment, poverty, improper education and the generally difficult conditions endured by single parent families for these serious challenges to child development in Taiwan.
The WVT has accumulated more than 500 topics related to human rights for children from facebook in preparation for Universal Children's Day on November 20. A survey revealed on Friday that over three quarters of netizens regard protecting children from abuse and violence the most urgent issue facing Taiwan today.
