Beijing (CNS) -- Although architects claimed it would be resistant to severe weather conditions, the interior of the Beijing Capital International Airport was exposed when strong winds ripped away part of its roof on the evening of November 22. Repairs were completed on the next day and operations weren't affected, the airport administration reported.
In theory the structure could survive hurricane force winds (the 12th level of the scale).
Public discontent and doubt were aroused by the contrast between the standards of high resistance the airport was supposed to be built to, and the nasty reality.
Netizen "Patriotic Yaowei" made the sarcastic comment that the famous airport was another "masterpiece" of our age. "Beijing Ventin" also aired concerns about the construction standards of the airport, and other netizens questioned if the debris blown onto the runway would affect normal flights. Challenges to the prize-winning design and public concern over who should take the blame are filling the air.
An accident of the same kind occurred on December 10 last year.
