China cheers its grain harvest

Beijing (CNS) – China's national gross production of grain was increased by 24.73 million tons over last year's harvest, culminating in 5.71 billion tons in 2011, reported China's National Bureau of Statistics on December 2. It is the 8th increase in a row in this past half century.

Over 110 million hectares were planted with grain over 31 provinces and regions in China in 2011, and 695 thousand hectares saw an increase of up to 0.6 percent compared to last year, according to the National Statistics Bureau. The volume of production per hectare was also up this year, reaching 5,166 kilos, a jump of 192 kilos.
