Taipei (CNS) – Wei, "微", was chosen as the Chinese character of 2011 in the cross-Strait annual Chinese character contest this year, with over 400 thousand people polled via the Internet.
Want Daily, Xiamen Commercial Daily and the Chinese Internet giant Sina jointly sponsored the activity.
Wei, "微", meaning small, wiped out its competiton with 407,405 votes, followed by Ai,"爱", meaning love, with 347,003. Other contenders were Xin "信" (trust) with 337,203, Bian "变" (change) with 329,130, Sheng "升" (rise) with 305,794, Tong "通" (pass through) with 293,876, Zhen "真" (reality) with 293,765, Kuai "快" (fast) with 283010, Die "跌" (drop) with 272867, and Pan "盼" (expectation) with 261,748.
Twelve calligraphers from Taiwan and the mainland were invited to the ceremony on December 8 to write Wei "微" in a multiplicity of styles.
