Beijing (CNS) – A total of 52.268 million tons of pollutants were emitted by China's automobiles in 2010, said a spokesmen for the Environmental Protection Ministry, Tao Detian on December 19, adding that tail pipe exhaust is responsible for a tremendous amount of contamination in China's atmosphere.
The number of vehicles on China's roads rose from 118 million to 190 million over the 11th Five-year Plan period (2006-2010), a 10 percent increase each year. They emitted almost 6 million tons of nitric oxide and 40 million tons carbonic oxide in 2010, but cars alone were responsible for over 70% of the emissions, according to China's Automobile Vehicle Pollution Control Annual Report released recently by the Environmental Protection Ministry.
