(ECNS) -- Towering at 15 meters tall, China's largest mailbox will be spared the wrecking ball, according to the Nanfang Metropolis Daily.
Located in the Guangdong provincial capital city of Guangzhou, the mailbox site is encompassed by an area to be developed into a financial center and will be protected as a cultural heritage.
The mailbox can reportedly hold at least 5 million letters and is situated at a "culture park" on the north shore of the Pearl River, an area included in the first phase of construction for the Guangzhou International Financial City project.
A detailed plan has been posted on the official website of Guangzhou's urban planning department, which is also seeking public opinion about the protection of the mailbox, the newspaper said.
Also protected in the culture park are the chimney, coal-shed and coal-dumping dock of a thermal power plant which stopped production in 2009, it added.
The mailbox was launched during that park's opening ceremony. It represented mailed letters from the public offering their best wishes for the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.
The massive mailbox was also part of another project, in which people could send letters to themselves, their parents, their children or anyone they wanted to send, but those letters wouldn't be received until 30 years later, when the mailbox would be opened for the first time.
Whether or not that project was ever officially begun remains unclear.
