(ECNS) -- A trash can imported from Japan is being marketed as a "magic bucket" with healing powers in Cixi, Zhejiang province, the Modern Gold Express reported on Friday.

The buckets have been selling well despite costing 550 yuan (US$89) each. Its sellers claim that drinking fermented fruit juice made in the buckets can help people keep fit and cure illnesses like diabetes, kidney disease and cancer.

A yellow tag with Japanese and Chinese characters provide the only descriptions of the product.

The Japanese translates as "It makes you feel happy and energized to use the bucket," while the Chinese part reads: "Please apply anti-acidification solution when using the bucket."

A doctor surnamed Hua said he heard about the product from his mother.

"She told me that by keeping sugar, water, and different kinds of fruits and vegetables in the bucket for seven days, it produces a kind of magic juice that can cure diseases," said Hua. "It doesn't make sense."

Hua said his mother had been tricked and asked a friend studying in Japan to investigate the product.

Hua learned that the bucket is produced by the Japanese brand ASK, but that it's normally used as a trash can in Japan.

It can be used to turn trash into organic fertilizer after it is sealed, and there are also some Japanese who use it to store rice or fresh vegetables, Hua's friend said.

ASK is a Japanese company that produces pesticides, and "these kind of buckets are not very popular in Japan," he added.

An online store on Taobao, China's most popular online retail marketplaces, has sold more than 400 similar buckets in a month.
