(ECNS) – Before Tesla went on sale on the Chinese mainland, a young man in Zhejiang province had bought one from Hong Kong, making it become the first Tesla on the mainland and earning the buyer over 2.5 million yuan (about $400,000), the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

Zhang Jianliang, who was born in 1989, bought the Tesla for 2.5 million yuan six months ago, which was also reported by the newspaper.

Zhang said he paid more than the car's real price, as an attraction for his wedding car company. The car wasn't licensed to run on the road, but Zhang discovered another way to earn money from the car.

A real estate company borrowed the luxury car for a show, inspiring Zhang to seek other opportunities. "Tesla was a rarity on the mainland. They want its reputation to attract more people," Zhang said.

His Tesla was used for around 10 shows a month, according to Zhang, and the highest fee for a show was 150,000 yuan ($24,000).

Zhang said he didn't calculate how much he had made from renting out the car for shows in the last six months, but "its cost was earned back."

As the car is not licensed to run on the road, it must be taken by a flatbed truck to each show destination. "Each kilometer costs me 8 yuan, and the total freight of a show is much higher than first-class airfare."

Zhang said several shows in May await him and his car. "More Teslas will come to China, so mine won't stay popular."

The first eight Teslas on the Chinese mainland were delivered to its buyers in Beijing on Tuesday.
