(ECNS) -- Motor vehicles are the biggest cause of air pollution in Beijing and several other Chinese cities, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The biggest polluter for Hanghzou, in East China's Zhejiang province, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, both in South China's Guangdong province, are motor vehicles, the ministry said at a national environmental monitoring conference.
Burning coal is the major source of air pollution for North China's Shijiazhuang and East China's Nanjing, while dust, mobile sources and industry are the major contributors in Tianjin in the north and Shanghai and Ningbo in the east, it was added.
The ministry also warned local governments about altering environmental statistics to make the situation appear better, saying that anyone who does so would face severe punishment.
