(ECNS) – Chinese artist Fan Yaping's latest exhibition of oil paintings takes the audience on a journey both visually and spiritually.
The ongoing exhibition at Today Art Museum, titled "Visualize Decoding: The Exhibition of Fan Yaping's Practice," features immense passion and wild imagination, according to exhibition curator and art critic Huang Du.
Fan's works, comprised mostly of portraits, are bursting with life. She skillfully commands the relationships between figure, sentiment, color, brushstroke, line and rhythm to capture emotions in her subjects.
"By looking into these characters' eyes, the audience can easily relate to them and feel what they feel, be it loneliness, anxiety, bewilderment or sorrow," Huang said.
Her depictions also shed light on the environment her characters inhabit, be it horrified, mystified or rejuvenated, as a reflection of the interaction between life and the world, according to Huang.
"I think the artist has matured a lot," said Maria Wei, an employee at Enreach Education, who came to the exhibit. "I've seen her previous angel doll works, which are cute and adorable, but now her works have elevated to explore humanity and life."
Born in Hunan province, Fan's work since 2000 has focused on the inner growth of adolescents through oil painting, sculpture, ink painting, video and poetry.
Her educational background is in art, psychology and philosophy, and her works often embody symbolic meanings of a character's mind.
"The symbolic meanings are far more powerful than the images, and that's where her uniqueness lies," Huang said.
