(ECNS) - The Chinese Consulate General in Durban, South Africa, has warned Chinese people in the city to be on alert following incidents of violence against foreigners in the city.
A consulate representative said a series of xenophobic attacks have taken place, threatening the property and personal security of foreigners in the eastern city of Durban.
All Chinese people and companies are urged to be vigilant in the event of riots or protests, to protect their safety and property, and to contact the police or the local Chinese Consulate General in the event of emergency.
More than 1,000 foreigners in Durban have fled their homes after a series of violent attacks, according to city police.
Most of the foreigners come from other African countries, and much of the discord has been sparked by competition for job opportunities.
South Africa is experiencing slow economic growth, with the unemployment rate reaching over 25 percent. The South African government is attempting to stem the violence using mediation, and promises to help foreigners who wish to return home.
