(ECNS) - China will invest 100 million yuan ($16 million) to build an eight-kilometer-long fence on the border between China and Vietnam to fight smuggling, officials in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region said on Wednesday.
The fence will have monitoring devices to help fight cross-border smuggling, said Wei Ran, vice secretary general and anti-smuggling chief of the Guangxi provincial government.
Through over 30,000 smuggling attempts in the first quarter of 2015, Guangxi anti-smuggling law enforcement agencies have cracked 923 cases and seized over 1,000 suspected smuggling vehicles.
More than 900 illegal/private docks or channels were shut down, and over 700 suspected smugglers were also arrested, according to Wei.
Smuggling across Guangxi's border at first appeared to be isolated individual cases, said Wei, however specialized smuggling gangs are pulling the strings with calculated planning and control now.
