(ECNS) - A documentary film about former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's visit to the United States in 1979 will be available to the public for the first time, according to the Beijing Youth Times on Monday.
The documentary, called "Mr. Deng Goes to Washington," will hit cinemas on May 15.
It tells the story of Deng's nine-day visit to the U.S. where he was almost assassinated.
Deng, then 75, was China's vice prime minister. During the visit, a KKK member charged toward Deng in an assassination attempt as he exited his hotel. A White House secret service member named Paul Kelly intercepted the attack.
The documentary's release marks the first time footage of these events has been revealed to the public.
Producer Lv Muzi said 90 percent of the documentary's footage was shot by cameras that followed Deng during his American visit, and was purchased from the U.S. at $250 per second.
