(ECNS) - China will establish more communication infrastructure to expand its broadband network, upgrading Internet coverage and speed, said China's information authority, following Premier Li Keqiang's recent call.
China aims to build over 600,000 4G base stations in 2015 to improve Internet access, according to China's Ministry of Industrial and Information Technology (MIIT) on May 8. It's part of a program called "Broadband China."
Propelled by new infrastructure, China's overall Internet connectivity should experience an increase in both coverage and speed, and around 40 million households should have their Internet access upgraded. The 4G network would be available for over 200 million households. In addition, another 14,000 villages are to have access to broadband Internet.
MIIT said that over 55 percent of clients would enjoy broadband speeds of 8Mbps or above. Broadband speeds of 50Mbps or 100Mbps will also be encouraged where feasible.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has drawn attention to China's inadequate Internet connectivity on multiple occasions. China should increase its Internet speed while reducing fees, Li has said.
