(ECNS) -- China has no plan to co-build the Kra Isthmus Canal in Thailand alongside the Thai government, according to chinadaily.com.cn, citing the Chinese embassy in the country.
Contrary to reports, the Chinese government has not joined any research efforts or specific cooperation arrangements regarding construction of the Kra Isthmus Canal, nor has the said government issued any statement on it, according to the embassy.
It is reported that on May 15, the Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration took to social media to announce that the Chinese and Thai governments had signed a memorandum regarding co-building the canal in Guangzhou.
The canal was said to offer a short-cut for Chinese ships, sparing them a longer trip to the Strait of Malacca, Singapore.
