(ECNS) -- Beijing's 4.19 million smokers consume an average 14.6 cigarettes each per day, according to Beijing Times, citing the local municipal health authority on Wednesday.
Totally 4.19 million people, or 23.4 percent of Beijing's population, are smokers, states a survey released by Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning.
The study shows 43.2 percent of men and 2.4 percent of women are smokers. On average, smokers consume 14.6 cigarettes a day, 14.7 for men and 12.2 for women.
For adult smokers, it costs 9.7 yuan (about $1.56) to buy 20 cigarettes. The average monthly expense for smoking is 159.5 yuan. There is no significant spending discrepancy between urban and rural smokers.
On average, 35.7 percent of adults who work indoors in public are exposed to secondhand smoke.
Different venues yield different exposure rates, including bars and night clubs (89.5 percent), restaurants (65.7 percent), homes (39.8 percent), primary and middle schools (32.8 percent), office buildings (19.7 percent), hospitals (12.8 percent) and public traffic systems (3.9 percent).
