(ECNS) -- Residents of the Chinese mainland are banned from gambling in Taiwan, including on the outlying island of Kinmen, said Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, at a regular press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.
Fan said current regulations and rules regarding mainland residents visiting Taiwan make it very clear that no gambling is permitted during the trip.
Accordingly, the mainland wishes to further expand the healthy development of tourism on Kinmen, which has rich resources.
Fan was confirming a statement made by Zhang Zhijun, the director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, during a visit to the island.
Zhang urged the county not to develop casinos otherwise the "three little links" would definitely be affected.
The "three little links" refers to the limited postal, transportation, and trade links between the mainland's Fujian province and the islands of Kinmen and Matsu, which are under Taiwanese administration. The mainland has been calling for these links with Taiwan to be further expanded.
