(ECNS) - A Beijing resident surnamed Lou was shocked Wednesday morning to find £53.16 had been transferred from two of her credit cards to pay for three transactions via the Uber app, the Beijing Morning Post reported Thursday.
Lou was woken by a surprise phone call from the UK early on Wednesday. She then found smartphone text messages from Uber, telling her a taxi she had hailed had arrived.
She immediately opened her Uber app and found nine taxi-hailing transactions, three of which were concluded and the rest canceled. The system also indicated that two separate amounts of £20.32 and £13.03 had been deducted from her Chinese credit card, and another £19.81 pounds transferred from her foreign credit card for a third transaction.
Lou contacted Uber via e-mail and was told her account information might have been leaked, and that she would receive a full refund. In a follow-up e-mail, Uber informed her that the password for her account had been reset and a further investigation into the case would be conducted.
Uber, the American transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, was launched in China in 2014 and is becoming popular in Chinese cities amid a taxi shortage.
The newspaper said Uber has no service hotline, and e-mail inquiries to the company have gone unanswered.
