(ECNS) - China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is introducing stricter regulations over business-related text messages to mobile phones, the Economic Daily reported Wednesday.
The new rules will require explicit consent from users before companies or individuals can send text messages. Senders will also be required to make the type, frequency and term of messages clear to subscribed users.
The rule will come into effect June 30 and violators will face fines of between 10,000 and 30,000 yuan ($1,600-4,800).
The number of text messages sent through China's mobile service providers reached 763 billion in 2014.
Some service providers run their businesses inappropriately, and unsolicited messaging is a controversial issue that needs to be addressed, the newspaper says.
