(ECNS) - A police booth in Weinan city of Shaanxi province has a sign spelled backward in both English and Chinese, according to a report on Tuesday.

The "POLICE" sign on the booth was spelled backwards as "ECILOP."

The Chinese sign, which should read "Jing Cha," was also spelled backwards as "Cha Jing." In writing Chinese, short phrases are occasionally written right to left for stylistic or historical effect, a mostly outdated practice.

Local police noticed the misspelled signs, said Ding Junshe, a traffic police officer working in the booth. "I heard there will be changes made," he said.

The police department will have the sign checked, said local traffic police, adding that misspelled English words will also be corrected.

Another police booth right across the street has no spelling issues.

"I hadn't really paid any attention. But now it does look like something is wrong," said a resident.

An online comment also joked about the sign, saying "It's correct when you look at it in the rearview mirror."
