(ECNS) -- A drenched man who failed in a suicide attempt immediately turned against the river he dived into, complaining it was dirty and stank.
Mr Liu, 48, was soaked and all alone, standing on an isolated patch of earth in the middle of a river shivering, when people spotted him and reported him to police in Yiwu city, Zhejiang province on Wednesday.
Local police threw Liu a lifebuoy and attempted to help him calm down upon rescue. He later admitted to being a businessman and resorting to suicide after losing a lot of money and struggling to figure himself out.
Liu jumped into the river in Dongyang city next to Yiwu at around 7pm and immediately regretted his decision. "The water was dirty and stank. It tasted awful," he said.
It was raining and the river was rushing in high flow, so Liu could barely keep himself above its surface and was swept downstream for several kilometers, all the way to Yiwu. He finally grabbed his life-saving chance when he saw a small island in the middle of the river, where he stood and waited to be rescued.
Having sustained no significant injuries, a regretful Liu feels lucky. "I would never do such a stupid thing again."
