(ECNS) – The Chinese public continues to pay close attention to the country's ongoing anti-graft efforts, according to a monthly public opinion report by China Youth Daily.
On June 11, China's former security chief Zhou Yongkang was sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting bribes, abusing power, and deliberately disclosing state secrets. The announcement of the verdict by the Tianjin Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People's Court immediately drew nationwide attention, making it second in the newspaper's opinion polls.
In addition, the results of disciplinary inspections of six centrally administered state-owned enterprises, and the illegal buying and selling of stocks by the spouse of a securities regulator, took fourth and fifth places, respectively.
At the top of the opinion rankings was the China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which took a historic step on June 29, when Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a ceremony in Beijing, at which representatives of the founding countries signed a framework for the current 57-member institution.
Reform proposals concerning administration of identity cards for Chinese citizens, discussed at a meeting of the Ministry of Public Security on June 8, was the third hottest topic of the month, according to the paper.
