(ECNS) - A number of films pertaining to historical tragedies, including the Nanking Massacre and the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), are to be available for viewing on Nicovideo.jp, Japan's largest online video platform.
By the end of July, Niconico will feature several historical war films related to Japanese aggression in WWII, according to statements by Niconico's parent companies Dwango and Niwango on Wednesday in Tokyo.
"City of Life and Death," by Chinese director Lu Chuan, focuses on the Nanking Massacre and made a splash in 2009 in China. However, it was not generally accepted by Japanese cinemas or TV, and had only two small viewing sessions in Japan in 2011. The film will be available on Niconico.jp on August 18.
"Yasukuni," another documentary portraying the war that was banned from public viewing in Japan, will be available on the website on August 15. In addition, on August 24, a documentary TV series called "Memories of the Massacre Nanjing 1937," based on Chinese American Iris Chang's works, will be shown.
Meanwhile, on July 30 Niconico.jp will release "Japan & Korea: the Ties That Bind," an English-made documentary that addresses the issues of "comfort women" and territorial disputes between Japan and Korea.
According to sources at Niconico, it is hoped that these documentaries will raise awareness in Japan and fulfill the Japanese public's desire to "know the truth."
