(ECNS) - The story of a woman sold into the sex trade has resurfaced in the Chinese media. The woman managed to overcome her circumstances and became a dedicated school teacher in an impoverished village.
Her story was later adapted into the movie "The story of an abducted woman."
China's top police officer in the war against human trafficking says the trade will not be tolerated, and that victims need to be supported, the Beijing News has reported.
An abducted woman
Gao Yanmin was abducted by two human traffickers in 1994, and later became an award-winning teacher in a remote village, despite the harm and humiliation she had suffered.
At age 18, the Henan province migrant was sold three rounds before being sold to her future father-in-law for 2,700 yuan (about $300 according to exchange rate then) in Xia'an village of Quyang county, Hebei province.
Gao was then betrothed to the man's son, and could not escape from Xia'an, as mountains and rugged paths made it nearly inaccessible.
Gao suffered mental, physical and sexual abuse, and tried to commit suicide three times. She gave birth to two children. Because the village lacked a teacher, and Gao was a junior high graduate, she began to teach, a job she found hard to give up.
News reports later helped spread her story and made her a national headline figure. As she received support and recognition, her situation improved. She was given the honor of "top 10 most touching figures in Hebei province" in 2006.
Later, Gao's life experiences were adapted into a movie, "The Story of an Abducted Woman."
