(ECNS) - Overseas Chinese have shown a strong interest in purchasing a home on the American estate formerly owned by Soong May-ling, also known as Madame Chiang Kai-shek or Madame Chiang, a First Lady of the Republic of China (ROC).
The home has just gone on the market at a price of $11.8 million, according to listing broker Jason Friedman, who works for Laffey Fine Homes in Great Neck, New York.
Friedman said he had received at least 50 telephone inquiries, of which 48 were from overseas Chinese. On July 28, seven potential buyers, all Chinese, visited the property.
The home for sale is one of the three houses. Outside the house is a Par 3 golf course and a swiming pool.
The house was overhauled in 2002. "Except for the house and swimming pool, it remains what it looked in Soong's time, like the log cain, the bamboo grove and the garden," said Friedman.
Madame Chiang spent much of her last years relatively secluded in the original home in Lattingtown, Long Island, until she sold it in 1998. The property was then divided into three houses. She died in 2003 at the age of 106.
The home for sale is one of three houses on the original property. It was sold in 2002 for $5 million and renovated by its new owner at a cost of $1 million. The home sits on more than 12 acres of land and has a golf course and swimming pool.
