(ECNS) -- Daniel Price, a British guy who is currently on an inter-continental bike ride from Antarctica to Paris, has kicked off his Chinese adventure in Chengdu, West China Metropolis Daily has reported.
Price is on a cycling campaign, which he calls "Pole to Paris", through Antarctica, Australia, Asia and Europe. He plans to spend one month in China, visiting Guangyuan, Taiyuan and Beijing, in addition to Chengdu. He has been in Bangladesh before landing in China.
Price is expected to ultimately arrive in Paris in December for the UN climate conference after visiting 15 countries and regions along the way, including Indonesia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh and China.
Born in west London, UK, Price gained his PhD at New Zealand's University of Canterbury. His research focuses on how to improve satellite techniques to monitor sea ice in Antarctica.
So far, he has ridden approximately 4,000 kilometers (about 2,485 miles) on his $1,000 black bicycle. Price is pushing a 50-kilogram package, comprised of the 10-kilo bike and another 40 kilos of luggage, including a laptop, a camera, medicine, food, water, battery and clothes.
"I've spent about 7,000 or 8,000 dollars and am almost out of savings," laughs Price. Thanks to $1,500 initial sponsorship and extra help along the way, he has been able to continue with his bike expedition, the expenditure of which has far exceeded his expectations.
Price's helmet has been stolen in Australia, and he has also had two minor traffic accidents, one in Indonesia and the other shortly before arriving in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
