(ECNS) -- A State Council proposal that encourages a new pattern of short holidays, dubbed "Friday afternoon plus the weekend," has sparked heated debate online, with some netizens expressing concern about possible financial implications.
A recent online poll on the topic attracted the participation of more than 40,000 netizens. While 81.4 percent say they are in favor of the new plan, 14.9 percent think it is not feasible. Some are concerned shorter work hours may lead to salary cuts.
Dai Bing, the president of the China Tourism Academy, said the State Council document focuses on expanding tourism consumption and boosting investment within the industry, rather than on the 2.5-day holiday itself.
The plan, which can be carried out where conditions are suitable, will be conducive to growth in the tourism market in the near term, though in the long run the market will still rely on implementation of the paid vacation system for sustained growth, it was added.
