(ECNS) -- China Mobile, the world's largest mobile carrier, is pushing ahead with the commercialization of integrated telecom services, with its traditional voice, text and multimedia messaging services set to be charged according to data usage, Chongqing Evening News reported on Friday.
It plans to kick off a pilot program in some cities by the end of this year and in Chongqing during the first half of 2016, an anonymous source with China Mobile's Chongqing branch told the paper.
China Mobile will offer IP phone services based on VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology to replace its traditional voice service, and with improved fourth generation (4G) networks, enable users to make phone calls as soon as next year.
Industry insiders say if China Mobile rolls out the new charge method as planned, the two other smaller carriers, China Telecom and China Unicom, will also likely follow suit.
