(ECNS) -- A cleaner was accused of theft and fired by a hotel in Jinhua City, east China's Zhejiang Province, according to reports on ctdsb.net.
The 50-year-old woman, surnamed Zhang, took two pieces of toilet paper from a lady's room in her working area on September 19 after not feeling well.
She put the paper in a plastic bag and was caught by a security guard who asked to check her belongings upon leaving the hotel. Zhang refused and left in a hurry, without any explaination.
The hotel dismissed her the next day, describing her actions as "extremely vile and setting a very bad example."
The hotel's human resource staff responded that they dealt with the issue in line with the company's "Employee Handbook", saying that "everyone, either a clearner or management staff, should abide by the regulations."
Zhang signed a one-year labor contract with the hotel on February 24 this year. She said she was worried the incident would ruin her reputation and future job opportunities.
It said Zhang's uncooperative manner had led to their decision.
In defense of Zhang, Huang Xinfa, a local lawyer, said she had no intention to stealing anything from the hotel and does not deserve such a harsh punishment.
