(Ecns)-- A group of powerful trash cans will replace old ones on the streets of Southwest China's Chengdu city by the end of this month, according to the local city management committee. Advanced technology enables the devices, nicknamed "King Kong," to go further than simply holding trash.
As protection against fires and chemical reactions, each garbage can is armored with four layers of 5-millimeter-thick steel. The inner structure is made of inflammable and anti-corrosive material.
The bins will be closed until users approach with items to be thrown away. Radar sensors will then be activated to detect and categorize what is being discarded. When nearly full, the garbage cans will automatically send messages to cleaners.
Powered by solar energy, the bins will also serve as Wi-Fi hotspots with GPRS functions.
