(Ecns) -- A 25-year-old woman appeared in a Beijing court on Wednesday for attempting to kill and dumping her newly-born baby last July.

The unexpected boy was the second child of the woman, surnamed Wan. Reluctant to raise the baby, she tried to strangle and stab it with scissors after giving birth at home, dumping the still-alive child into a garbage bin near her house, according to prosecutors. The baby was later found to have died from serious brain trauma.

Wan expressed regret for her action. The jobless Beijing local claimed she was unable to afford a second child due to an extremely tight financial situation, and that she detected the pregnancy too late to undergo abortive surgery. She didn't tell her family about the pregnancy either.

During the trial, Wan's lawyer submitted a statement of forgiveness by her husband, in which he claimed responsibility for being careless about his wife and family. He also asked for a reduced punishment.

The verdict has yet to be announced.
