(Ecns) -- The town of Lijiang, a famous tourist resort and world cultural heritage in southwest China's Yunnan Province, is becoming quieter amid a government effort to combat noise.
Stores are banned from playing music or advertisements outside through amplifiers, and CD shops or instrument sellers are advised to provide headphones to customers for samples. Bars are being asked to turn down loud music before 11:30 p.m.
Light music is allowed from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at some leisure places such as bookstores, tea bars and cafes, but any form of performance is forbidden.
The authority says violators will face a week-long shutdown of their businesses and fines of up to 5,000 yuan ($788).
