(Ecns)-- Clients of China Merchants Bank are now able to withdraw cash from ATMs by showing their faces.
As Beijing Youth Daily reports, the card-free service relies on cutting-edge facial recognition technology, which calculates even slight differences in facial features.
The bank says facial scanning has already been used at desk services to help identify clients. The face-for-cash method has also gone through dozens of trials since the first such ATM debuted at a mobile financing exhibition in Shenzhen last week.
When facial recognition is used, the ATM takes a photo of the client and compares it to an image in a database. Clients must also input phone numbers, ID numbers or pin codes.
The bank has conducted research on other bio-identification methods, such as fingerprints, voice IDs and eye scans, but facial recognition has proven the most feasible.
