(ECNS) -- Feeling Hungry? A few clicks on the mouse or presses on a cellphone will bring the food to your doorstep quickly. The rise of food delivery service is becoming the new fashion in China. However, the Beijing-based evening newspaper The Mirror has uncovered some disturbing facts behind the burgeoning business.
Tatty cooking environments
Along an alley near Tsinghua University there are dozens of eateries, and most serve customers via online ordering apps. Around noon, food delivery workers flock to the alley to pick up orders. One restaurant stood just opposite a public toilet, and the smell wafted through the air.
The reporter visited a restaurant that sold rice with chicken, a current favorite among young people. A sheer cloth divided the dining hall from the kitchen in the back, which measured only 7 to 8 square meters. No license was found on display in the tiny room. A woman who was playing with her cellphone took the order and went to cook for the reporter. During the process, the reporter easily got into the kitchen for a look, which seemed to not bother the chef, as she was busy cooking and looking at her cellphone at the same time. Ten minutes later, the food was ready.
