(ECNS) -- Nearly 100 Uber drivers in Xi'an claimed their accounts have been unexpectedly closed overnight, leaving the money inside inaccessible, according to CNR.cn.
A driver surnamed Zhao said he was not able to log into his Uber account since Monday night. He joined Uber not long ago. Due to diligence, Zhao's weekly performance has surpassed 70 rides, which entitles him to a 7000 yuan ($1098) weekly bonus.
The driver said he contacted other Uber drivers through WeChat and learned that nearly 100 accounts in the city were shut down, making it impossible to claim earnings.
Zhao planned to complain to Uber, but found no contact number or address for the company. He mailed an address listed on the website with no reply so far.
A reporter from CNR.cn found a large number of Uber drivers in Beijing, Chengdu and Xiamen facing the same trouble. In these cases, Uber claimed that they were cracking down on drivers who profit from faking rides, and that those whose accounts were closed were suspects.
Zhao and other drivers interviewed all dismissed their involvement in fraudulent activities.
Cui Zhongyao, a Xi'an-based lawyer, said drivers have the right to claim their money, even if Uber shut down their accounts. He added that the company's action could be assumed as illegal profiting if it refuses to return the cash.
Some drivers in Xi'an have decided to take legal action against Uber if it doesn't respond to their complaints.
