(ECNS) -- China's Ministry of Environmental Protection has identified smog sources in nine major cities.
Smog in Beijing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Shenzhen comes mainly from vehicles, while that in Shijiazhuang and Nanjing is created by coal burning. Dust, industrial activity and mobile sources are major causes of smog in Shanghai, Tianjin and Ningbo, in turn.
The ministry will identify the sources of smog in all provincial capitals by year end. It also set a goal in early 2015 to reduce yellow-labeled cars (vehicles that fail to meet the European No. 1 standard for exhaust emissions).
From January to October, 995,200 yellow-labeled cars were wiped out, which is 85.46 percent of the target.
The ministry has issued an ultimatum for cities that are behind schedule, including Beijing.
