(ECNS) -- Tianjin on Tuesday issued its first-ever red alert ahead of a wave of heavy air pollution in the coming days.
The red alert, the most serious level under a four-tier emergency response system, will last from 0 a.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. on Thursday, limiting vehicles on roads according to odd-even license plate numbers and banning activity at construction sites, transport of materials and waste.
During a red alert, kindergartens, primary schools as well as middle schools are advised to suspend classes, while companies may adopt a flexible schedule.
On Saturday, Tianjin issued an orange alert, the second-highest level. This year, the city has issued 16 alerts for air pollution.
