(ECNS) -- A passenger has been caught carrying eight dangerous signal flares at a railway station in Qingdao city, East China's Shandong province.
The flares, detected at a security check, are designed for marine use and can reach a height of 300 meters and last for more than 40 seconds after firing.
The 30cm-long, cylindrical flares are flammable items, and are forbidden as carry-on luggage, according to railway regulations.
The passenger, named Tan, said he intended to use them as fireworks at home, as he wanted to impress his friends and relatives.
A policeman said the type of flare could be fired by simply spinning and pulling, posing a significant safety threat on trains.
Tan is now facing punishment for carrying dangerous flammable and explosive goods in a public place.
