(ECNS) -- The Ministry of Culture has vowed to crack down on sensational online programs that display body defects or abuse animals to attract attention.
The ministry said in a circular that rapid growth in Internet-based showbiz in China is marred by a lack of supervision, and includes pornography and content with "low and vulgar taste."
The ministry urged both organizers and performers to be accountable for their actions. The campaign will target live streaming of art shows, broadcasts of game playing skills, and other programs in audio or video forms.
Organizers will be required to shut down sites offering illegal content, keep records of their activities and report to law enforcement departments. Performers are prohibited from providing pornographic, obscene or violent content on the Internet, the circular said.
Priorities in the campaign include a ban on using physical defects or mutated human body parts to create online attention. It also forbids performers undertaking activities that are "terrifying, cruel, and harmful to their physical and mental health."
Online programs must also not abuse animals, the ministry said.
It will place rule-breakers on a black list and forbid their performances across the country.
